If our grandniece had not sent us her "Flat Stanley" we probably wouldn't have taken as many pictures. Everybody who helped us were great sports. We are in Kona on the Big Island, I am standing by the sign that indicates that this where the swimming portion of the Iron Man competition begins, at the Kailua Bay. Behind me you see the spire of the Mokuaikaua Church built in 1836, and hidden by the trees is the Hulihee Palace constructed for High Chief Kuakini in 1837, both located on Ali'i Road. Yes, there are palaces here since Hawaii once was a kingdom with kings & queens.
The Kona-Kailua area is usually very warm, but we were there in January, a much cooler time of the year. Behind Jeff is the Kailua Bay, with many historical buildings over his shoulder.
Here Jeff is getting ready to snorkel with his cousins among sea turtles, & other unique fishes at Holualoa Bay. It is a very shallow and sheltered bay where people mingle with sea turtles an sometimes paddle surf. I decided to stay on shore and dance & socialize with a group of immigrant Mexicans having a party on the beach.
This is a view of Mauna Kea, half way to Hilo on the East side of the Island. Yes, that is snow on top of the 13,796 foot tall summit. It was January, after all.
This was Captain John, who flies back and forth between Maui & Kona several times per day. He was the pilot that flew us over to Kona, and the pilot who flew us back to Maui.
Back on Maui we take time to go watch the 20 - 30 feet tall waves coming in at Ho'okipa Beach, near our home. It's not unusual to swim among sea turtles here, too. The last picture is in Lahaina, a historical whaling town located on the other side of our island. Lahaina is a great vacation location and young people really enjoy visiting there.
"Flat Stanley" had quite a Hawaiian Adventure and collect many things for our grandniece. He took home so many cultural, artistic, and natural items to show to her class. Isabella, who is seven, knows that when she grows up she is going to live in Hawaii. We invite all our friends to come visit us.
